The Furies by John Jakes

The Furies was my favorite volume from the saga of the Kent household. Amanda Kent was the granddaughter of Philip. Her father Gilbert had died in Boston. Her mother and stepfather married and then the new man in the family gambled away the family assets. Amanda and her brother Jarad ended up going west to find a new life there. They had been young but made it across the vast unknown. They met trappers and Native Americans. They had hardships, had been attacked and somehow survived their ordeals but became separated. Jared married an Indian girl and Amanda was kidnapped by trappers and later sold to the Indians. Jared nevertheless could not come across his sister.

Amanda survived her episode with trappers and Indians and ultimately made it on her personal. She began a company in the gold rush location and make lots of money. She met lots of men and women and made pals everywhere. A single of her clients was a sea captain who she fell in adore with. He was from the east and told her of his trips to Boston and New York. She asked him to see if the Kent and Son publishing home was nevertheless in operation. As soon as she knew it was nevertheless there, she dreamed she could one particular day acquire it back for family members.

Later she happened to see her lengthy lost brother. He had a son that had gone in the ministry. Jared had married Grass Singing, an Indian girl, from years earlier and she had then died. He at some point went into the gold mining company with some partners and they found gold. Whilst staying with Amanda, he got in a gunfight and died. Amanda identified the mine and had it expanded and then it really began to create.

In between her organization and the gold mine, she was thinking she was in reach of possibly getting her father’s printing business back. She decided to go to Boston and bring her son Louis and he may have a excellent future there. Right after they arrived, she looked up individuals she when knew in the printing business and the banker who handled her father’s organization. She found that her father had invested money that her mother didn’t know about. He had purchased stock in the Blackstone Co which was worth significantly now but they didn’t think she was alive. The bankers hadn’t disposed of her shares fortunately. They were now worth about 4 million. She couldn’t believe it. She had income to put down on the printing company but it would have taken her entire savings. Now she could acquire it back if it was readily available.

Amanda purchased the former family residence for more than it was worth. Her primary goal was to recover old family mementos if she could come across them. She got lucky and found an old trunk in the attic that had her grandfather’s sword and tea from the Boston Tea Party ship. Phillip Kent had been a collector of family mementos and she wanted them back for her loved ones residence. Though she resold the house, she had a challenging time finding the printing organization back even with the money to buy it.

Ultimately, Kent and Son publishing was back in the family members thanks to Amanda’s tough function and cleaver prowess. She had also met Jared’s son Jephtha who was entitled to the gold mine profits. Jephtha did not want the income himself but it could go to his sons when they got older. He asked Amanda to aid a runaway slave go to Canada. Amanda was content to aid but the slave owner discovered her home and sent his henchmen to rough up her residence. Amanda was hurt trying to protect her property. About the identical time, the former owner of the printing company came to her home. He did not know she was the sister of the man who had fought with him back on the US Constitution and had left him with lifelong scars. He was angry with her and got in an argument and pushed her son and hurt him. She shot him and about that exact same time her home was becoming ransacked by the slave holders’ men. When the police arrived, Stowell, the print house owner was dead. Amanda was badly injured and her house was destroyed.

Amanda was dying from her injuries. Understanding this, she wanted to get almost everything in order. She produced her assistant promise to care for Louis right after she was gone and to do every thing he could do to aid Louis turn out proper. Her Sea Capt buddy came to see her. She told him she was sorry she hadn’t married him when he asked and she did enjoy him. She had felt obligated to appropriate the wrongs inflicted on her family and that is the reason she did what she did.

She prayed Louis would turn out to be an honorable man when he grew up. As it turned out, he was a rather selfish person but he was successful. Amanda purchased the printing firm, re-hired the publisher and requested that they also commence a newspaper. She told the publisher he would have to run the paper with support for the preservation of the union and support the freedom of slaves. She had him agree to these whole issues as she knew she would soon die.

She trusted her assistant Michael extremely significantly and asked him to care for her son, be his legal guardian and also take the name Kent as his own. She was going to let him share in the proceeds of her will. She considered him loved ones. She created certain Louis’s last name would be Kent also ahead of she died. She wished for the family members to leave a great legacy as an honor to Philip Kent’s life and her fathers too.

John Jakes does a wonderful job of keeping this historical fiction fascinating with colorful characters. They have had strong causes and most cared for the downtrodden and for that reason did not rise too high on the social ladder.
